Frequently asked Questions
About Star Baths
A Star Bath is an outdoor bath designed for fresh-water bathing under the open sky. Outdoor baths are incredibly popular in high-end accomodation and homes.
Set-up requires connection to hot water via mains, califont or indoor tap. See our Planning section for how to do this simply.
Once the bath is set-up it's as easy to use as an indoor bath, but way more memorable.
Every bath shares the same core design, then you choose how you finish and style it.
A Star Bath is uses fresh water every time, just like an indoor bath. So it's gentle on the skin and exceptionally natural and clean.
A spa relies on chemicals to balance the same bathing water, over and over.
With a Star Bath are no pumps, no jets, no chemicals, and no water sitting there between uses. You fill it when you want to use it, enjoy it like an indoor bath, then empty it afterwards.
That means no ongoing spa maintenance, no chemical balancing, and no systems running in the background.
Everyone knows how to use a bath, so if you are an accommodation provider this simplifies the guest stay.
Star Baths are designed around the ritual of outdoor bathing, without the complexity of a spa pool. They’re fresh-water baths, beautifully made, easy to understand, and designed to feel calm, simple, and special.
They’re also highly customisable, with a range of finishes, colours, and additions to suit different spaces and budgets.
We offer three core options, all built on the same bath design:
- Bare / Clad Yourself, for those who want to finish or build the exterior themselves
- Everyday / Built-In, a simple, clean option designed to integrate into your space
- Clad, a fully finished bath in timber or painted architectural cladding
The bath itself always stays the same, the difference is how it’s finished and styled to suit your space.
Two adults fit comfortably. Or four kids, pretty comfortably too.
A Star Bath measures 2075mm (L) × 1080mm (W) × 665mm (H).
Dry weight is approximately 165kg. A typical fill is around 220 litres, and when the bath is full and in use, the total load is approximately 500–520kg.
Each Star Bath is built as a complete outdoor unit using a handcrafted fibreglass bath shell, a DuraGalv steel support frame, insulation, and a fully enclosed weather-protected structure.
Everything is designed for durability, simplicity, and long-term outdoor use.
Yes. Heat retention has been a key design priority for Star Baths. Wrapped in high-grade New Zealand wool and filled with insulation, our baths are built for the outdoors and designed to hold warmth beautifully.
Yes. You can choose from our curated palette, or select any Resene colour for painted cladding. If you prefer a more natural look, we also offer a range of stains for our timber cladding. For our Everyday Bath, there is also a selection of standard colour options available.
Star Baths were created with Airbnb and guest stays in mind. Airbnb owners have been DIY-ing outdoor baths for years because they know how powerful outdoor bathing is as a guest experience. We saw the need for something better, a bath purpose-built for the outdoors.
As far as we know, we’re the only company dedicated solely to outdoor baths. And it’s no coincidence that stand out stays and award-winning properties so often include some form of outdoor bathing, it’s an experience guests genuinely value and remember.
Yes, you’re very welcome to come and see us in Raglan.
Will it work at my place
Yes, absolutely.
We’ll help you think through everything from placement to hot water and drainage, and guide you toward a setup that works best for your space.
Your bath needs a stable, level, non-settling base. This could be a concrete pad, engineered deck, compacted gravel base, or pavers on a properly prepared base.
Yes, as long as the deck is designed to carry the full loaded weight of the bath, which is around 500–520kg when in use.
Your Star Bath arrives as a complete, assembled unit, ready to position.
We recommend at least three people to safely move the bath into place.
No, but it’s very simple. Everyone knows what a bath is, and there are no electronics or complicated systems involved.
Once your base, water, and drainage are sorted, you and your plumbing expert will be sweet.
Yes, they are purpose-built for outdoor use.
From the materials to the insulation and construction, everything is designed to handle New Zealand conditions and perform long-term outside.
Water, heating and drainage
A Star Bath uses approximately 220 litres for one person, or around 180 litres for two people.
This is much less than other outdoor baths on the market, which require up to 500 litres.
The bath is designed to give a deep, comfortable soak while using as little water as possible, which means less water, less heating, less noise and lower ongoing costs, and a more natural experience.
There are a few ways to do this, depending on your site:
- House mains, best when the bath is close to the house
- Existing califont, when the bath is close to the califont
- New dedicated califont
- Portable califont
- Hose fill via an indoor mixer tap
-
There are two main options:
- Tapware, fixed taps for permanent setups
- Star Baths Freedom Fill, a removable hose-and-attachment system
You can use a range of tapware options, as long as the spout is long enough to reach over the bath’s wide edge. We have options available to suit different styles and budgets.
Alternatively, you can use our Star Baths Freedom Fill system for a simpler, more flexible setup.
If you’re doing permanent plumbing, you’ll need a plumber.
You may need an electrician if your setup requires power, for example a dedicated califont.
Depending on your region and setup, you may also need consent. Your plumber can guide you on what’s required.
Your Star Bath needs a proper drainage solution suited to your property.
This could include connection to mains wastewater, an on-site wastewater system, a soak hole, or land disposal /garden irrigation in some rural situations, or another suitable drainage method approved by your plumber.
No. Bath water should not be discharged into stormwater drains or natural waterways.
A typical Star Bath fill is around 220 litres. As a simple rule of thumb, it’s about $1 per bath, depending on how the water is heated.
And when the bath isn’t being used, there are no ongoing costs, no standby power, no chemicals, no systems running.
If your bath is a long way from the house, the best option is usually a dedicated califont.
This gives you hot water right where you need it, without having to run long plumbing lines from the house. Califonts can be mounted nearby and are a great solution for more remote or standalone bath locations.
Yes, both. As long as you have a way to heat the water, tank or rainwater setups can work well with a Star Bath.
Using and enjoying your Star Bath
Every time, just like an indoor bath.
No. There are no pumps, no systems, and no chemicals. Just fresh water, every time.
Yes, absolutely. This is one of the benefits of our baths.
Our favourite recipe is:
- Lots of Epsom salts
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon of baking soda
- 5 drops of pure lavender essential oil
Trust us, it feels amazing on your skin.
For people who prefer to avoid spa chemicals, Star Baths offer a simple advantage: fresh water every time, no chemicals, and no pumps.
Outdoor bathing helps you slow down, warm up, and switch off. Warm water can support relaxation, circulation, and better sleep, and the outdoor setting adds another layer of calm and settling your nervous system.
There is also research showing that hot water immersion can offer benefits comparable to sauna use.
Research from the University of Oregon, published June 2025 in the American Journal of Physiology
We offer two options:
- Eclipse Lid, keeps the bath clean and protected
- Midnight Coverall, a tailored cover that goes over the lid
Our range includes bathside seating and storage, the Retreat Tray, the Eclipse Lid, and the Midnight Coverall.
The Eclipse Lid protects the bath and keeps it clean when not in use and also doubles as a table.
If bathing alone, you can take one of the three peices off and keep the other two on to retain even more heat!
Yes, absolutely.
Star Baths are designed for outdoor use in all seasons. With hot water and the right setup, they can be enjoyed year-round, warm in winter, or cool and refreshing in summer.
For general cleaning, we recommend washing detergent and warm water. For marks and stains, we recommend Simple Green.
We’re also working on some branded bottles for these products, so keep checking in to see where we’re at.
